Health & Safety

For Lafarge Zambia, being the most advanced company in the building materials industry in the country means setting new health and safety standards. Health and safety is at the center of everything we do, from the daily routines in our plants to our customers' project worksites and our actions in our neighboring communities. Company's aspiration is to conduct our business with zero harm to people and to create a healthy and safe environment for our employees, contractors, communities, and customers. This is how we intend to make a difference in the way we work, in our business and communities.

Health & Safety, the overarching value for Lafarge Zambia

At LafargeHolcim, we want to do more than prevent accidents: we want to conduct our business with a goal of zero harm.

To realize this aspiration, we are committed to:

  • Creating a healthy and safe environment for all stakeholders (employees, contractors, communities, and customers) based on a true safety culture.
  • Maintaining a global Health & Safety Management System designed to continuously improve our performance and actively manage risk in our business.
  • Targeting operational discipline by instilling a mindset of safe execution and follow-up.
  • Communicating openly with all stakeholders on relevant health and safety issues.

Targeting zero accidents

East Africa: Driving for excellence

Lafarge places its employees' safety at the heart of its concerns and extends its best practices to the service providers involved in its activity.
The Group's objective is to attain "0 fatal accidents". This is achieved, in particular, by significantly reducing road accidents involving the trucks of haulage contractors working for Lafarge.

In 2006, Lafarge launched its "Driving for Excellence" program in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. This is a comprehensive program:

  • after undergoing training, the drivers must obtain a road safety permit to be able to work at the 4 factories in the region,

  • vehicles are inspected regularly to ensure they comply with the Group's technical demands in the area of safety,

  • road patrols are organized every month, involving road haulage

Health & Safety is embedded in Lafarge Zambia’s operations

At Lafarge Zambia, we believe that "if we're good in safety, then we're good in business." Health and safety is a critical success factor for our operational performance and not something we regard as a separate activity.

This is why it is seen as a core competency at all levels of Lafarge Zambia's organization, from site operators to top managers, and as a key component of successful personal performance.
